THE LIFESTYLE

A Historic City

Salem is known for its rich maritime history, as being the birthplace of the National Guard and for the infamous Witchcraft Trials of 1692. Salem is also a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly City where its residents, and over a million tourists annually, can easily visit historic architecture, unique attractions, world-famous museums, and an eclectic mix of shops and dining options. And, with easy access to public transportation - including its very own ferry direct to Boston - Salem is a great city to live, work, study, and play.

YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH

Peabody Essex Museum

The Peabody Essex Museum is the oldest, continuously operating museum in the US. Once the East India Marine Society established in 1899, it now combines the collections of the former Peabody Museum of Salem (which acquired the Society's collection) and the Essex Institute. Its total holdings include about 1.3 million pieces, as well as twenty-two historic buildings. It currently also ranks among the top 10 art museums in the United States in terms of gallery square footage, operating budget and endowment. The PEM holds more than 840,000 works of historical and cultural art covering maritime, American, Asian, Oceanic and African art, Asian export art and two large libraries with over 400,000 books and manuscripts.
